Configuring DNS Servers

With the Managed DNS Service, you can use DNS servers in various forms.

Operating with Managed DNS Servers Only

The following figure shows a configuration in which operations are taken care of only with DNS servers provided by IIJ or a business operator in partnership with IIJ (for the premium plan only).

You do not need to prepare DNS servers separately by yourselves.

Refer to "Operating DNS with Managed DNS Servers Only" for more information.

Operating a Managed DNS Server as a Secondary Name Server

The following figure shows a configuration in which operations are taken care of by using your DNS server as the primary name server and Managed DNS Servers as the secondary name servers.

It is also possible to let the primary name server focus entirely on zone management in a manner you are used to and entrust the secondary name server (Managed DNS Server), which is excellent at security measures, with handling access from the outside (hidden master configuration).

Refer to "Operating a Managed DNS Server as a Secondary Name Server" for more information.

Operating a Managed DNS Service as the Primary Name Server

The following figure shows a configuration in which operations are taken care of by using Managed DNS Servers as primary name servers and your DNS server as the secondary name server.

It is also possible to set up a configuration in which DNS queries are handled only by your DNS server, while using the strong role management function, zone editing functions from the web, and other functions including DNSSEC signatures provided by the Managed DNS Service.

Refer to "Operating a Managed DNS Server as the Primary Name Server" for more information.
