Registering and Changing Name Servers

To use DNS, you need to register the name servers with a higher zone.

With the Managed DNS Services, three dedicated name servers can be assigned to each of your zones. These servers are called "Managed DNS Servers."

Use the following method to check what Managed DNS Servers are used.

  1. Open Dashboard.
  2. Select a service code (dpfxxxxxxxx) for the IIJ DNS Platform Service.
    * You can perform the same operation by clicking the service code of a service code (dpfxxxxxxxx) for the IIJ Managed DNS Service.
  3. Select a service code (dpmxxxxxxxx) for the IIJ Managed DNS Service.
  4. The Record Management screen appears. Click "" in the Zone Information.

Name servers to register vary depending on your form of utilization.

  • When you use only this service’s DNS servers
    Register three Managed DNS Servers.
  • When you use your server as the primary name server and a server belonging to this service as a secondary name server
In addition to the three Managed DNS Servers, register your primary name server. However, when you use your primary name server in a hidden master configuration, register the Managed DNS Servers only. Refer to "Operating a Managed DNS Server as a Secondary Name Server" for more information.
  • When you use a server belonging to this service as the primary name server and your server as a secondary name server
In addition to the three Managed DNS Servers, register your secondary name server.
  • When you migrate name servers
Change the name servers sequentially in accordance with the migration procedure. Refer to "Migrating Existing Zones" for more information.

When you register Managed DNS Servers, register the server names only. There is no need to register the IP addresses.

The registration destinations of name servers are as shown below.

  • For domains used for the our Domain Management Service (organizational JP type, jp type, gTLD type)
You can register via the control panel or IIJ Service Online. Refer to "Name Server Registration" for more information.
  • For domains used for another company’s domain management service
Apply for registration with the registrar (designated business operator) you are using. For information on the application procedure, contact each registrar (designated business operator).
  • Subdomains such as sub.example.com
Register the NS record with the higher zone (example.com). Even when you use both example.com and sub.example.com with this service, you will need to register them manually.
  • Reverse domains (*.in-addr.arpa, *.ip6.arpa)
Apply for registration with the organization that assigned the IP addresses. If you use an IIJ line service, you can apply to register via "Name Server Registration."
